CHI’s Welfare to Work Programs Beat Contract Goals
CHI Career Services has always been recognized as among the top performing welfare to work programs in New York State. But the final 2006 contract results indicate that eight week classes met or exceeded the key milestones of completion of classes, job entry and 90-day retention for 200 students on public assistance. CHI Career Services Director Jeffrey Bolanos said, “The key is delivering value that is apparent to students, employers, and our funding sources.”
Funded by the Westchester County Department of Social Services, CHI offers two computer skills classes in New Rochelle with a fast track from public assistance to employment. The first is a course in Microsoft Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Access that quickly prepare a student for entry into nearly any administrative office environment. Medical Administration provides a more specialized experience, teaching the vital software and coding skills that every hospital and doctor’s office needs for medical billing.
At a recent CHI graduation ceremony, students talked about how classes changed their lives.

Bright Space Illuminates CHI Homeless Shelter
The Bright Space project, sponsored by The Children’s Center at Motorola and Bright Horizons Family Solutions, recently opened its 130th children’s play area at a CHI shelter in Suffolk County. The idea behind the project is to take an infrequently used living space in a homeless shelter and renovate it with fresh and bright paint, toys, books, and activities, with the intent of creating a warm and developmentally enriching place for children.
During the process, which spanned from November of 2006 to March of 2007, CHI Supervised Family Residence Director Lynnsey Blume made visits to the Children’s Center at Motorola to see a Bright Horizons facility.
CHI’s Motorola Bright Space was developed with a puppet theatre, an art easel, a reading corner with books and big soft bean bag chairs, a housekeeping corner with an eat-in kitchen and cleaning supplies, a dress up corner with costumes to spark the imagination, as well as provision for other activities including blocks, Legos®, and board games. The walls have rich and bright citrus colors, and the new flooring is protected by a big beautiful alphabet and shining sun area rug. Our heartfelt thanks to Motorola and Bright Horizons Family Solutions.
