Saving the ‘American Dream’: Can Manufactured Housing Bring back the Affordable Single-Family Home?

WHITE PLAINS, NY – March 7, 2017 – Urban Land Institute Westchester/Fairfield is hosting an eye-opening panel discussion with Alexander H. Roberts, Executive Director of Community Housing Innovations, and Shelly Detwiler of Atlantic Homes followed by a tour of one of Westchester County’s first manufactured homes on Thursday, April 6th from 8:30am to 10:30am at 34 Lockwood Road in Cortlandt Manor, NY. In 2015, Community Housing Innovations won a pilot grant from New York State to develop ten manufactured homes for first-time homebuyers in Westchester County. The homes are built to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) specifications entirely in a factory down to the curtains and towel bars. They pre-empt local building codes and cost a fraction of stick-built or even modular houses. A typical 1,500 square foot home costs well under $100,000, plus the cost of land and site work. This event, held at the site of one of the completed homes in the Town of Cortlandt, will reveal all of the costs involved and answer the question of whether manufactured housing could restore truly affordable single-family home ownership to the New York suburbs. Built by Atlantic Homes, the house at 34 Lockwood Road is currently available for purchase as a fair and affordable single-family home. Applicants must meet maximum income limits in order to qualify.
